Khun Nilawan Pintong, born on 6 December 1915 and died on 7 February 2017, was a Thai feminist who championed women's rights. She founded an empowerment center and a magazine for women called Satree Sarn, Thailand's first women's publication. In addition, she is the first Thai to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service. She and the other award recipients received $10,000, a gold medal, and a certificate for their role in empowering Thai women.
Career:
A year after teaching in a secondary school under the Ministry of Education, she was appointed chief of the Official Publications Section and then chief of the Foreign Press Section.
Nilawan established Satree Sarn Magazine with the assistance of three friends despite the lack of funds. Its topics covered many topics, from fashion to crafts to art to literature. Within three years, it became Thailand's most widely read the magazine.
Achievements and Awards:
A Ramon Magsaysay Public Service Award was presented to her.
Chulalongkorn University awarded her an Honorary Doctorate of Arts.
