Pranab Mukherjee was a politician and statesman from India who presided over the country as its 13th president from 2012 to 2017. Mukherjee was a senior politician of the Indian National Congress and held numerous cabinet positions in the Indian government over his five-decade political career. Mukherjee served as the Union's finance minister from 2009 to 2012 before being elected president. The Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, was presented to him in 2019 by Ram Nath Kovind, his successor as president. During the 1980s and 1985, he served as the Speaker of the Rajya Sabha.
Career:
In 1967: His political career began with the Bangla Congress, in which he was a founding member.
In 1969: He managed V. K. Krishna Menon's successful campaign in the Midnapore by-election.
In 1972: He was brought into the Indian National Congress by Indira Gandhi, who also incorporated the Bangla Congress into the group.
In 2009: Mukherjee has once again been appointed finance minister.
In 2012: Mukherjee became India's first president.
