Daniel T. Blue Jr., widely known as Dan Blue, is an American lawyer and veteran North Carolina politician. Born on April 18, 1949, in Lumberton, North Carolina, he grew up in Robeson County and graduated as his high-school class valedictorian. Blue earned a mathematics degree from North Carolina Central University and a law degree from Duke University. He entered the North Carolina House in 1980 and became the state’s first Black House Speaker in 1991, serving until 1995. After a brief congressional campaign in 2002, he returned to the legislature, later moving to the Senate. Blue has also led the National Conference of State Legislatures and built a long legal career in Raleigh.
