Benjamin Harrison, a well-known President of the United States, was born in Ohio. After graduating from Miami University in Ohio, Harrison went on to the University of Cincinnati to study law. As a Republican who first entered politics, he served in the US Senator from 1881 to 1887. He became the first president from Indianapolis after barely defeating Grover Cleveland in the 1888 presidential election.
Benjamin Harrison Presidency:
Throughout his presidency, Harrison did a number of odd things. For one, he approved the Sherman Antitrust Law which was made with the intent to reduce monopolies then backed high tariffs that were meant to protect American industry.
But it didn’t stop there, Harrison also supported the enlargement of the fleet and national forests. He even put money into African American educational opportunities. And let’s not forget about how he dispatched troops to end a western Native American practice known as the Ghost Dance organization.
Ultimately his efforts paid off. Harrison managed to get North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Washington all in on the union. Even after leaving office he still made an impact by continuing work in Republican politics but it wasn’t enough to win him another term.
At the age of 67, he passed away on March 13th 1901.
