Gil Shaham was born on February 19, 1971. He is one of the greatest violinists of our time; his flawless technique is complemented by his inimitable warmth and generosity of spirit. As a child, he studied violin with Samuel Bernstein of the Rubin Academy of Music in Israel, receiving annual scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation. His debuts with the Jerusalem Symphony and Israel Philharmonic in 1981 were followed by a first-place finish at the Israel Claremont Competition the following year. He then attended Columbia University and Juilliard on a scholarship.
Gil Shaham Career:
• Gil Shaham debuted as a soloist with the Jerusalem Symphony when he was ten. Less than a year later, he performed with the Israel Philharmonic, one of Israel's leading orchestras. A winner of the Claremont Competition at age 11, Shaham attended Juilliard, where he studied with Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang.
• Gil Shaham's career advanced in 1989 when he replaced Itzhak Perlman at the Royal Festival Hall to perform Bruch and Sibelius violin concertos.
