Thomas Jacob Hilfiger is an American fashion designer who also serves as the company's creator. He began creating preppy apparel for his own namesake menswear label in the 1980s after beginning his career in the 1970s by helping to launch the People's Place chain of jeans/fashion stores in upstate New York. Later, the business branched out into women's apparel and different high-end products, including perfumes, and it went public in 1992. Hilfiger's collections frequently draw inspiration from the style of music subcultures and are promoted in collaboration with the music business, using superstars like American R&B singer Aaliyah in the 1990s.
