About (Profile/Biography):
Lee Alexander McQueen CBE was born on 17 March 1969 & died on 11 February 2010. He was an English fashion designer and couturier. His first label, Alexander McQueen, was founded in 1992, and he was chief designer at Givenchy from 1996 to 2001. His four British Designer of the Year awards (1996, 1997, 2001, and 2003) are among his accolades, as is the CFDA's International Designer of the Year award in 2003. He died of suicide in 2010 at 40, shortly after his mother passed away, at his Mayfair, London home.
Alexander McQueen Career:
• Alexander McQueen started his label in 1992, and he briefly lived in Blow's basement when his house was being renovated.
• His studio moved to Hoxton Square in 1993, where Hussein Chalayan and Pauric Sweeney were also based.
• His first collection after graduation, Taxi Driver (Autumn/Winter 1993), took inspiration from the 1976 Martin Scorsese film.
Alexander McQueen Early Runway Shows
• In 1993, McQueen presented his first professional runway show at the Bluebird Garage in Chelsea for the Nihilism collection for Spring/Summer 1994.
• Alexander McQueen Banshee collection was his second runway show after creating this collection. McQueen met his future "right-hand woman" outside of a "high profile fashion show" while trying to "bluff his way in."
Alexander McQueen Highland Rape
• The fourth runway show for McQueen's Autumn/Winter collection of 1995 brought McQueen to the world's attention. Highland Rape, which refers to the Highland Clearances of Scotland, was a controversial collection.
• His song "Alarm Call" is also featured on the same album, as is the iconic topless dress that appears in his video "Pagan Poetry."
Alexander McQueen Gucci Partnership
• Alexander McQueen signed a contract with Givenchy's rival Gucci before his contract with Givenchy was up in 2000. A deal with Gucci allowed McQueen to expand the Alexander McQueen brand with 51% of the company.
• Alexander McQueen dedicated his Spring 2008 collection, La Dame Bleue, to Isabella Blow, who had committed suicide earlier in the year. He also included works by his longtime collaborator Philip Treacy, a protégé of Blows.
Alexander McQueen Personal Life
• Alexander McQueen married documentary filmmaker George Forsyth on a yacht in Ibiza in 2000. There were two bridesmaids at the wedding: Kate Moss and Annabelle Neilson. In those days, same-sex marriage in Spain was illegal. The two maintained a close friendship after the relationship ended a year later.
Alexander McQueen Awards:
• British Fashion Designer of the Year
• Commander of the Order of the British Empire
• Council of Fashion Designers of America
