It is often said that Ma is an "aggressive acquirer" and shares the same investment approach as American investor Warren Buffett.

1998: Ma Huateng founded Tencent in 1998 with four other classmates. Ma developed the company's first product after attending a presentation for the world's first online instant messaging service, founded in 1996 by an Israeli company called ICQ.
1999: Ma Huateng's team launched a similar software called OICQ (Open ICQ) in February 1999, with a Chinese interface. It became one of the most popular services in the country after over a million users signed up by the end of 1999.
2000: Earlier in 2000, Ma Huateng sold Tencent's shares to US investment firm IDC and Hong Kong's Pacific Century CyberWorks (PCCW).
2015: Ma Huateng announced Tencent would build a long-distance internet hospital in Wuzhen in December 2015.
