His 1954 science fiction horror novel I Am Legend has been adapted three times for the screen. Matheson co-wrote the 1964 film adaptation with Vincent Price.

• His parents were Norwegian immigrants Bertolf and Fanny Matheson of Allendale, New Jersey. After his parents divorced when he was eight, his mother raised him in Brooklyn, New York.
• His 1960 novel The Beardless Warriors is based on his experiences in Europe during World War II, during which he served with the Army. In 1949, he graduated from the University of Missouri's Missouri School of Journalism.
