Matthieu Ricard, born on 15 February 1946, is a French writer, photographer, translator, and Buddhist monk who lives at Shechen Tennyi Dargyeling Monastery in Nepal. Matthieu Ricard grew up surrounded by the personalities and ideas of the French intellectual scene. The Pasteur Institute awarded him a PhD in molecular genetics in 1972. He eventually gave up his scientific career and practiced Tibetan Buddhism in the Himalayas. Ricard sits on the board of directors of the Mind and Life Institute.

• Matthieu Ricard’s study focused on the brains of long-term meditators, such as himself, who have spent a minimum of three years in retreat.
