Matthieu Ricard, born on 15 February 1946, is a French writer, photographer, translator, and Buddhist monk who lives at Shechen Tennyi Dargyeling Monastery in Nepal. Matthieu Ricard grew up surrounded by the personalities and ideas of the French intellectual scene. The Pasteur Institute awarded him a PhD in molecular genetics in 1972. He eventually gave up his scientific career and practiced Tibetan Buddhism in the Himalayas. Ricard sits on the board of directors of the Mind and Life Institute.
Matthieu Ricard Career:
• Matthieu Ricard’s study focused on the brains of long-term meditators, such as himself, who have spent a minimum of three years in retreat.
• His organization, the Mind, and Life Institute, strives to bring scientists, Buddhist scholars, and meditators together. Daniel Goleman edited the book Destructive Emotions, which he contributed to.
• Tibetan, An Inner Journey, Monk Dancers of Tibet and Buddhist Himalayas, and Journey to Enlightenment are all works he has co-authored and photographed: From a Hermitage in the Himalayas. Many Buddhist texts, including The Life of Shabkar, have been translated by him.
• The Power of Compassion to Change Yourself and the World from Altruism: The Power of Compassion was translated into English in June 2015 and excerpted in Spirituality & Health.
• His 2015 book, Caring Economics: Conversations between Scientists, Economists, and the Dalai Lama, was also published in 2014.
