John Dickson Carr was born on November 30, 1906 and died on February 27, 1977. Besides Carter Dickson, Carr Dickson, and Roger Fairbairn, he also published detective stories under pseudonyms. After living in England for several years, he is often classified as a "British-style" mystery writer. His novels tended to have English settings and characters, especially country villages and estates.
Career:
Carr's masterpiece is usually considered to be The Hollow Man (1935), a mystery about Dr. Fell
The Mystery Writers of America awarded Carr the first of two Special Edgar Awards for his biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1950.
Also, in 1963, he received the MWA's Grand Master award.
1963: A stroke paralyzed Carr's left side in the early spring when he lived in Mamaroneck, New York.
1949: A Graveyard To Let, a novel, for example, shows him hitting baseballs improbable distances.
1815: At the close of the Napoleonic Wars, Carr wrote The Bride of Newgate, one of the earliest historical mystery novels.
