Emily Giffin was born on March 20, 1972. Several of her novels are classified as chick lit. She served as editorial director of the school's newspaper while attending Naperville North High School (a suburb of Chicago)'s creative writing club. She studied history and English at Wake Forest University, where she was also a basketball manager. She then attended law school at the University of Virginia. Her novels Something Borrowed, Heart of the Matter, and The One and Only are among her best-known works.

• Her career at Winston & Strawn began after graduation from law school in 1997. Emily Giffin moved to London in 2001 and began writing full-time. Eight publishers rejected her first young adult novel, Lily Holding True.
• Her new novel, Rolling the Dice, was adapted into the New York Times bestseller Something Borrowed in 2004, which received favorable reviews.
• A two-book deal was signed with St. Martin's Press in 2002. Revising Something Borrowed (2011) gave her the inspiration for Something Blue (2005).
• In 2006, she published her third novel, Baby Proof. In 2007, she completed her fourth novel, Love the One You're With.
