Denzel Washington was born in New York in 1954. Denzel studied at Fordham University after finishing high school with the goal of pursuing a career in journalism. He participated in student drama plays, though, and got the acting bug. The drama was titled "Wings of the Morning," and it was about the establishment of Maryland's colonial assembly and the creation of the state of Maryland (a legislative body).

Careers:
In 1981: He made his debut on the big screen in Carbon Copy.

In 1989: After he received the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the movie Glory, his film career took center stage.

In 1992: He portrayed Malcolm X in a movie.

In 1993: He portrayed Joe Miller, a lawyer, in the drama movie "Philadelphia."

In 1999: Washington got a Golden Globe Award for his performance as the lead in The Hurricane.

In 2001: "Training Day", in which Washington starred, earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor.  

In 2010: A near-future post-apocalyptic action-drama called The Book of Eli included Washington as its lead.

In 2012: For his role as the lead in Flight, Washington received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

In 2016: Washington played a significant role in The Magnificent Seven.

In 2016: Fences was directed by Washington and co-starred Viola Davis.

In 2021: Washington performed Macbeth, the title figure in William Shakespeare's tragedy.

Washington received the 2001 Best Actor in a Leading Role Academy Award. 

The war movie "Glory" was Denzel's Academy Award-winning film in 1989.
