Shirley Jackson was an American writer known for her horror and mystery works. She attended Syracuse University and met her future husband, Stanley Edgar Hyman. The couple settled in North Bennington, Vermont, where Jackson gained public attention for her short story "The Lottery". She continued to publish numerous short stories and memoirs, including The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Jackson's health began to deteriorate in the 1960s, leading to her death at the age of 48.
