Sheldon Allan Silverstein was a multi-talented American writer, poet, cartoonist, singer-songwriter, musician, and playwright born in Chicago in 1930. He briefly attended university before being drafted into the U.S. Army. During his career, he became a prominent children's author and songwriter, with works such as The Giving Tree and "A Boy Named Sue" becoming popular worldwide. He died in 1999 at the age of 68.
