Mary II was the Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1689 until her death in 1694, co-reigning with her husband William III. Mary was the eldest daughter of James, Duke of York, and his first wife Anne Hyde. Mary was raised as an Anglican, despite her parents converting to Roman Catholicism. Mary's marriage to her first cousin William of Orange, a Protestant, was approved after pressure from Parliament. She mostly deferred to her husband but proved to be a powerful, firm, and effective ruler when he was abroad. Mary died of smallpox at the age of 32.
