M. S. Subbulakshmi was born in 1916. She was a Carnatic singer from Madurai, Tamil Nadu. In 1987, she became the first musician to be awarded the highest civilian honor of India, the Bharat Ratna. In 1974, Srimati M. S. Subbulakshmi became the first Indian musician to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Prize with the remark that "Exacting purists accept Srimati M. S.
