He exposed corruption in municipal governments across the US and championed leftist values. Steffens was born in San Francisco, California, and raised in Sacramento. He attended the University of California, Berkeley before studying in Europe. Steffens began his journalism career at the New York Commercial Advertiser before moving to the New York Evening Post.
