Jyotirao Govindrao Phule was born in 1827 in a backward cast family, Mali cast. He was an eminent Indian social reformer, great thinker, and anti-caste social reformer who fought for women's rights and equality. He promoted education for women and later on opened the first school for girls. He was also a businessman, and in 1882 he styled himself as a cultivator, merchant, and municipal contractor.
