James Dewey Watson is an American molecular biologist, geneticist, and zoologist who co-authored the academic paper proposing the double helix structure of the DNA molecule with Francis Crick in 1953. He, along with Crick and Maurice Wilkins, was awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material. Watson has also been associated with the National Institutes of Health and helped establish the Human Genome Project. He has written many science books, including Molecular Biology of the Gene and The Double Helix.
