It is based on the 1996 film Fargo which was directed and penned by Joel and Ethan Coen. The show exists within the same fictitious world as the movie. The Coens liked Hawley’s script so much that they agreed to be executive producers. The program was first aired on FX channel on April 15, 2014, and has been an anthology with each season set in a different time and location, having a different plot and mostly new characters with cast, though there are some minor overlaps. Each season borrows heavily from different films by the Coen brothers, making numerous references to them.
