Dorothea Dix (1802-1887) was an American social reformer who worked to improve conditions for people with mental illness. She lobbied state legislatures and Congress to fund the construction of public asylums and led the recruitment and training of nurses for the Union Army during the Civil War. Dix's tireless advocacy and lobbying efforts led to significant improvements in the treatment of mental illness in the United States.
