Alan LaVern Bean was a US Navy officer, aviator, aeronautical engineer, test pilot, NASA astronaut, and painter. He was born on March 15, 1932, in Wheeler, Texas, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Bean served in the US Navy as a fighter pilot and attended the US Naval Test Pilot School before being selected as part of Astronaut Group 3 in 1963. He made his first flight into space aboard Apollo 12 and his second and final flight on the Skylab 3 mission. Bean pursued his interest in painting after retiring from NASA.
