Mulayam Singh Yadav was born on November 22, 1939, in Saifai Village of Etawah district in Uttar Pradesh. Party leaders and workers called him Netaji (meaning respected leader in Hindi). His dedication to secularism and social justice made him a prominent political figure. With a socialist party ticket, Mulayam Singh Yadav was elected as a member of the legislature in 1967 from Jaswant Nagar, Etawah. In his student days, Mulayam Singh Yadav was an agile fighter and a political wrestler. Mulayam Singh Yadav served as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh thrice and Defense Minister of India twice in a long political career marked by extreme highs and lows.
