Mulayam Singh Yadav was born on November 22, 1939, in Saifai Village of Etawah district in Uttar Pradesh. Party leaders and workers called him Netaji (meaning respected leader in Hindi). His dedication to secularism and social justice made him a prominent political figure. With a socialist party ticket, Mulayam Singh Yadav was elected as a member of the legislature in 1967 from Jaswant Nagar, Etawah. In his student days, Mulayam Singh Yadav was an agile fighter and a political wrestler. Mulayam Singh Yadav served as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh thrice and Defense Minister of India twice in a long political career marked by extreme highs and lows.

In 1977: Mulayam Singh Yadav was appointed as State Minister for the first time.
In 1992: As a socialist, Mulayam Singh Yadav founded the Samajwadi Party.
In 1967: Mulayam Singh became a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly for the first time.
In 2003: Mulayam Singh Yadav became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. 
In 1996: The Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat was represented by Mulayam Singh Yadav in the 11th Lok Sabha.
In 2004: The margin of victory he won in the 2004 by-election for the Gunnaur assembly seat was 183,899.
In 2004: He won the electionas a member of the Lok Sabha from Mainpuri.
In 2014: Azamgarh&Mainpuri are the two seats he contested in the 16th Lok Sabha.
In 2019: A margin of over 94,000 votes separated him from BJP's Prem Singh Shakya in Lok Sabha elections.
