Grover Cleveland Presidency:
Grover practiced law after receiving his legal degree before getting interested in politics. Before vying for the presidency in 1884, he was elected as the governor of Buffalo, N.Y. and later as the governor of that state.
Cleveland's priorities as president were lowering government spending, vetoing several bills that would have raised spending, and carrying out a number of civil service overhaul initiatives.
Cleveland sought reelection in 1888 but lost to Benjamin Harrison. He did, however, run for president again in 1892 and win, making him the first leader to hold office for a non-consecutive period of time.
Cleveland concentrated on lowering the federal debt during his second election and rejected several proposals that would have boosted government expenditure.
