Did you know that Sonia Sotomayor, an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, was born in the Bronx? I mean, if you’re from New York you probably know. In 2009 President Barack Obama picked Sonia to be an associate supreme court justice of the US. Her being picked made her the first Latina or Hispanic justice to ever hold a position on the Supreme Court. She graduated from Cardinal Professional skills High School in 1972 and got her bachelor's degree from Princeton University in 1976. Three years later she got a doctorate in law from Yale Law School.
Sonia Sotomayor Career:
After finishing law school, Sotomayor worked as an assistant to a district attorney in New York. She eventually started her own firm.
She was appointed by President George H.W. Bush to the U.S District Court for Southern New York County in 1991. And later was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the U.S Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1997. Gaining notoriety as a justice, she supported affirmative action, questioned the conservative majority of jurors, and supported freedom for minorities and underprivileged people. In her autobiography “My Beloved World” published in 2013, she gives an in depth documentation of her life and journey to the highest court position.
Sonia Sotomayor Contributions: For her contributions to the legal community and public service, Sotomayor has won numerous honors and awards, including the Leadership Award from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, the Medallion of Excellence from the United states house of representatives Hispanic Caucus Institute and the Judge of the Year Award from the Hispanic National Bar Association.
