Martin Cooper, a well-known American inventor, was born in Chicago to Ukrainian Jewish immigrants. He earned his degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in 1950 and participated in the Korean War as a submarine lieutenant. He graduated with a master's in electrical engineering from IIT in 1957, and the university awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2004. He holds a position on the university's trustee board.
Career:
In 1954, Cooper quit his initial position at the Chicago-based Teletype Corporation to work for Motorola. Cooper spent 29 years creating and running Motorola's cellular and paging operations.
Cooper oversaw Motorola's communications systems division during the start of the 1970s.
Motorola's top executives backed Cooper's mobile phone idea by spending $100 million between 1973 and 1993 before any profits were made.
Cooper advanced at Motorola to become Vice-President and Corporate Director of Research and Development.
Cooper is listed as the principal inventor on October 17, 1973, patent for the "radio telephone system."
Cooper co-founded Arraycomm, a company that creates software for mobile antenna technology, in 1992.
