A great military commander, Napoleon Bonaparte is regarded as one of the greatest in history. Among the most celebrated and controversial leaders in world history, Napoleon's political and cultural legacy continues to endure.
Career:
In September 1785: Bonaparte was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the La Fère regiment of artillery
In July 1792: Napoleon became a captain in the regular army, and in 1796, after suppressing a royalist insurrection against the revolutionary government, he became Emperor.
In November 1799: The French general Napoleon became the first consul, and his military dictatorship led to the establishment of a European empire.
At Marengo in 1800: Napoleon defeated the Austrians and then negotiated a general European peace, establishing French dominance.
In 1802: Napoleon became Emperor of France after being proclaimed consul for life.
Death:
Waterloo humiliated Napoleon, and he was exiled to Saint Helena, where he died of stomach cancer in 1821, aged 51. Exactly what killed Napoleon has long been a mystery.
Unknown Facts:
Marie-Louise, the 18-year-old daughter of the Austrian Emperor, was Napoleon's wife after he annulled his childless marriage to Joséphine in 1810.
