Martin Luther King Junior was born on January 15, 1929 in Georgia. As a civil rights leader, he played an important role in the struggle for equality for African-Americans. In spite of his efforts to fight injustice meted out to blacks, he carefully avoided violence. Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolent movement provided him with operational techniques based on Christian doctrines. Montgomery Bus Boycott was his first major campaign. King Jr. became the fiercest spokesperson of the civil rights movement as a result of it, which not only abolished racial segregation on Montgomery public transportation. A number of nonviolent campaigns followed and Martin Luther King Juniorgave many inspiring speeches. As his movement grew, he began to advocate for equal employment opportunities.
Career:
In 1954: While Martin Luther King Junior was serving as pastor in Montgomery, Alabama, he joined the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in 1954. His advocacy for the rights of colored people continued after he joined the executive committee of the National Association.
In 1955-56: Martin Luther King Junior staged his first major campaign, the Montgomery Bus Boycott. As a result, the black community boycotted the town's public buses and desegregated the system.
1957: 'Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom' was the name of SCLC's nonviolent demonstration. In his first national speech, King called for the right to vote for blacks at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
As early as 1958: King published a book called 'Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story'. A black woman with mental illness stabbed King in the chest with a letter opener while King was signing copies in Harlem.
During a 1959 visit to India, King visited the place where Mahatma Gandhi lived. As a result of the trip, he became more committed to non-violence.
