    Satya Narayana Nadella was born in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, on 19 August 1967. He is an American business executive who was born in India. Nadella became the CEO and executive chairman of Microsoft in 2014, succeeding John W. Thompson as chairman and Steve Ballmer as CEO in 2021. He was the executive vice president of the enterprise group and Microsoft’s cloud before becoming CEO and was in charge of growing and running the company’s computing platforms.

    Education

    Nadella went to the Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, before earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology in Karnataka in 1988. After that, in 1990, Nadella moved to the United States to pursue an M.S. in computer science at the Wisconsin–Milwaukee University, where he graduated. In 1997, Nadella graduated from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business with an MBA.

    Career

    Before joining Microsoft in 1992, Nadella was a Sun Microsystems technology staff member. Nadella has led important projects at Microsoft, including the company’s shift to cloud computing and creating one of the world’s largest cloud infrastructures.

    Nadella served as the Online Services Division’s senior vice president of research and development (R&D) and the Microsoft Business Division’s vice president. Later, he was named president of Microsoft’s $19 billion Server and Tools Business, where he oversaw a business and technical, cultural shift from client services to cloud infrastructure and services.

    By September 2018, Microsoft stock had tripled since Nadella became CEO, with a 27 percent annual growth rate.

    Personal Life

    In 1992, Nadella married Anupama, one of his father’s IAS colleagues. She was a B.Arch student at Manipal’s Faculty of Architecture when he met her. With their three children, a son and two girls, they split their time between Clyde Hill and Bellevue, Washington.

    Zain, his son, was a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy who was legally blind. Zain died in February 2022, when he was 26 years old.
